It was an honor to meet with the South African HIV cure team while in Edinburgh, Scotland for the International Association of Bioethics Meeting. We discussed how they could apply the same principles of crowdsourcing contests to improve community engagement for HIV cure research in the South African context. They face different challenges than us in the US because few people have easy access to the Internet and often cannot afford data plans for cell phones. Technology should not be a barrier to accessing information and participating in crowdsourcing contests. We believe the best way to engage community is through partnerships with local community-based organizations, key community leaders, local businesses and those directly impacted by HIV/AIDS.
